There are plenty of things to do in Costa Rica. The diverse natural beauty and variety of outdoor activities in Costa Rica is practically unparalleled in other parts of the world. Try some of these ideas.

Hiking and Backpacking

With over 20 national parks, Costa Rica offers hundreds of trails to explore untouched Mother Nature. There are many short hiking trails great for wildlife viewing for a few hours as well as trails that a traveler can spend days exploring.

Surfing

Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise with hundreds of surf breaks from all different sides and swell sizes. Surfing is good all year round in Costa Rica. The waters are warm and the waves are consistently good.

Mountain Biking

The smaller roads with less traffic generally offer a better mountain biking experience than the major highways do. These smaller roads wind through less populated and more exotic parts of Costa Rica. Bike tours are a fun and adventurous way to explore the countryside.

River Rafting

A number of fast moving rivers flow from the central mountain chain down towards the Caribbean Sea or to the Pacific Ocean. Rafting trips leaving from the San Jose and nearby are quite common. Rafting trips can be organized for a few hours or up to several days in length.

Windsurfing

The world famous Laguna de Arenal is the best windsurfing spot in Costa Rica with winds getting up to 30 knots. Laguna Arenal is considered one of the three best windsurfing spots in the world from December to March.

Rainforest Canopy Tours

Until recently, the only way into the tropical rainforest of Cost Rica was by walking through thick brush or by hiring a boat. Now visitors and explore the rainforest atop a system of platforms that are raised about 20 meters off the ground. Once on the platforms you can wait for a flock of birds to fly by or a troop of monkeys and then move to the next platform via a cable system.
